WCTEE: Innovative Design and Education

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The Conference

Under the joint patronage of the Faculty of Architecture at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Bratislava, Slovakia, and the World Institute for Engineering and Technology Education (WIETE), the Faculty of Architecture and the World Institute for Engineering and Technology Education (WIETE) organise jointly the 4th World Conference on Technology and Engineering Education, under the theme Innovative Design and Education to take place at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Bratislava, Slovakia, between 2 and 5 September 2015.

Several institutions and individuals, members of the WIETE, as well as other organisations are co-sponsors and supporters of the Conference.

Conference Co-sponsors include the following Partner Institutions:

Association of Taiwan Engineering Education and Management (ATEEM), Taichung, Taiwan

College of Engineering & Engineering Technology, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, USA

Commonwealth Science and Technology Academy for Research (C-STAR), Chennai, India

Polytechnic Institute of New York University, New York, USA

University of Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana

It is anticipated that the number of Co-sponsors and Support Organisations will increase as several other institutions consider becoming involved in this endeavour.

This series of the World Conferences on Technology and Engineering Education (WCTEE) builds on the series of extremely successful world conferences held in the past, such as the first WCTEE, held in Kraków, Poland, in September 2010, the second WCTEE, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in September 2011, the third WCTEE, held in Athens, Greece in September 2014, the World Conference on Engineering Education (Sydney 1989, Portsmouth 1992, Minneapolis-St. Paul 1995); the East-West Congress on Engineering Education (Kraków 1991, Łódź 1993, Gdynia 1996) and, then, the Global Congress on Engineering Education (Kraków 1998, Wismar 2000, Glasgow 2002, Bangkok 2004 and New York 2006). Based on such previous extensive experience, the WCTEE is a continuation of the international effort of sharing and exchanging ideas, experiences and achievements within the international community of technology and engineering educators.

Areas of Interest

It is envisaged that the Conference will provide the participants with the opportunity to interact on all aspects of technology and engineering education, and such interactions as workshops, team work, panel debates, group discussions, individual presentations, and others, will be led and aided by several eminent international keynote speakers, leaders of the specific areas of interest.

In accordance with the Conference aims and objectives, the following general areas of interest were identified for discussion:

International collaboration between academic and industrial organisations in technology and engineering education;

Individual country’s achievements in technology and engineering education, and relevant case studies;

Technological advancements and transfer across the world, and the participation of developing countries in this process;

The diminishing interest among school leavers in technology and engineering courses and its impact on the future supply of qualified personnel for industry, commerce and services;

The role and importance of technology and engineering education in sustainability and environmental protection;

The interaction between academia and industry for the advancement of technology and engineering education;

Alternative methods of education and training, and the promotion of continuing education of technologists and engineers;

Quality assurance, accreditation systems, ranking of academic institutions and the recognition of foreign qualifications;

The role, nature and importance of research and development in technology and engineering education;

with Innovative Design and Education being the lead theme.

Specific Topics

Suggested specific topics for the Conference include, but are not restricted to, the following:

curriculum design, implementation and evaluation;

the nature of cognitive processes, heuristics and creative thought;

the impact of specific new technologies on effective training;

problem- and project-based education and training;

community attitudes towards technology and education;

the participation and equity in technology and engineering education;

the importance of academia/industry co-operation;

advanced and alternative methods of education and training;

the promotion of continuing and further education;

work-based learning and the involvement of employers;
